What goes into the calculation?

Annual operating difference

Current annual cost = annual operations × current cost per operation.

Proposed annual cost = annual operations × proposed cost per operation + annual platform and support.

Annual saving = current annual cost − proposed annual cost.

Return and recovery

Net benefit = annual saving × years − initial investment.

Net ROI = net benefit ÷ initial investment × 100. With no initial investment, this ratio is not defined.

Simple recovery = initial investment ÷ positive annual saving. No positive saving means no investment recovery in this model.

Keep the comparison fair

Use equivalent scope and cost inclusions for both approaches. Account for staffing, travel, maintenance and recurring costs without double counting.

The model excludes financing, taxes, inflation, discounting, residual value, changing volumes and non-financial benefits. Validate the assumptions with your team.
